The Rugby World Cup 2003 kicked off on 10 October 2003 and lasted for 44 days around Australia.

During this time, the world's 20 best rugby nations contested a total of 48 matches for the ultimate prize - the Rugby World Cup. The event consisted of 40 Pool matches, four Quarter Finals, two Semi Finals, a 3rd/4th Play Off and the Final.

Matches were played in six capital cities and four major regional centres across the country from Sydney to Perth and as far reaching as Launceston to Townsville.

The top two teams in each of the four pools progressed to the Quarter Finals stage. The winners then progressed to the Final at Stadium Australia in Sydney on 22 November 2003.
